"City in the Air" Contemporary Oil Painting Exhibition Exhibition Date: 16 July to 31 August 2012 Overview Beyond our usual spatial thinking
From a mini screen To a great "City in the Air" After watching the horrific scenes of the Sichuan earthquake on the daily news, Pu Yuemei began to focus her latest work on different types of buildings and structures. Pu also found inspiration through personal matters concerning her future living arrangements. The ever increasing worries of property prices and where to set up home began the concept of "City in the Air". Pu uses an intuitive description and interprets without the traditional aesthetic. Created cities where no one knows the origin, have an independent point of view and are away from the real world. From the Artist
"City in the Air" is my latest series of work. Nowadays, in busy cities, the growth of high-rises is even faster than of plants. Height yearning and imagination from my childhood, have helped me create the form of stories behind my paintings. In the series, chimneys are bottomless and buildings are hovering defying gravity. Within the fantasy world I created in my work, there are different modes of transportation, each building has its own story and each chimney has its own keeper. With the children in a state of melancholy expecting a new sky far away, I am envisioning my "City in the Air". Artworks of Pu Yuemei have been exhibited in Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai respectively since 2007. Finally, the film "City in the Air" has recently been released and was directed by Mr Chen Qiangdao.
